I was a lot more sore than I thought I would be after the race Sunday. I didn't (couldn't) do anything Monday but limp around. Tuesday I went to gym and rode the exercise bike for about 20 minutes to try and flush my legs out a little and got in some good stretching Tuesday night. Wed morning I went out for a 2 mile jog. I was extremely tight/sore starting out but loosened up nicely during mile 2. The weather was perfect, the skies were clear- left me wanting more. I took Thursday off from running even though I really wanted to get out. I figured I better not push it too fast to get back in to training; and the pollen count in Georgia was the 2nd highest in history. Friday morning was a little cool and windy from the front coming through. I went out for a 2 mile run and it felt great. My 2nd mile was way too fast but it felt good to just let it go!!

ING Georgia Marathon
As stated through the last few weeks my first 9 weeks of training were flawless then injuiries and illness dominated the last 9. I did get in a couple of quality weeks so I thought if I ran a smart race maybe I could perform like I did in Green Bay last fall.
I picked Len up from the marta station Friday and he stayed with us all weekend. Saturday morning Len and I got up early and went for a quick 2.2 mile run and then Kathy, Glenn, Len, and I went to Glenn's first race- the ING GEorgia Tot Trot. I should have known from the organization of that things were going to be tough this weekend. After standing in a long, single line to pick up his bib, we went around to the race area. They lined the 4 and under group up for their race and then proceeded to talk for 15 minutes on the loud speaker. It is really a shame because Glenn was so excited to run the race all week- then with all of the stuff going on and then standing amongst all of these people for 15 minutes, he didn't want any part of it. We ran the race (I carried him mostly), then he didn't even want his little medal.
We went to the expo after that and luckily we got there early. It was pretty crowded while we were there and when we walked out the line stretched all the way around the the building and down a block.
We went to Michele's house for a pasta dinner Saturday night. It was great to see everyone: Brian and Nicole, Lori, Barbara and Tim, Mike and Nancy, Judy, Michelle, Michele/John/Shannon.
Sunday Len and I got to the race a little late, checked our stuff, and head for the start. Major crowdedness. We worked up as far as we could but we way in the back. The first 3 miles were very, very crowded and slow- a lot of weaving. The marathoners split off at 3.25 miles so the congestion got a little better. One thing that was not good was we had water just before the split, probably at the 3.1-3.2 mile area, then the water stop at mile 5 was not there- anywhere. They had the signs up saying water just ahead but then nothing. The next water was not unitl just after the 8 mile mark.
I cruised along pretty good until the 20 mile mark where I started cramping really badly in my calfs. I saw Lori and Autumn and thought I might run with them for a bit but I was cramping too bad. I turned on corner and saw a Bakery open. I went running inside and ask for some salt. After a weird look, they filled my palm with salt and off I went. I saw Brian and Nicole just I came out of the Bakery. I tried to run with them but the same thing happened with the cramping but Brian gave me some water wouldn't let me stop. Finally I had to stop. Both legs (calves and quads) locked up so bad that I couldn't even walk for a few minutes. Finally got going again and Brian/Nicole and I kept passing each other back and forth.
At about 22.5 miles Brian/Nicole/Autumn, and Lori yelled at me for a photo so after posing we took off and ran together for a bit- until I started camping again. The rest of the race was basically a walk, shuffle combo (mostly walking). I just wanted to get it over. Finally finished with my slowest time ever- but as we all said after the race- "ok, Georgia's checked off the list."
After the race we all hung out on some steps at Underground and then met up with Michelle when she finished- then it was off to the Varsity for some good greasy post marathon food!
It was great to see everyone again- look forward to the next time!!

ING Georgia Training- week 18- Race week

I don't know what I am doing running this race. Looking back on training my first 9 weeks went flawlessly. Then injury, sickness, then lingering injury made the last 9 weeks not so great. Add that to the warm temps that are expected and the hilly course- that is reason not to run the full marathon and maybe just switch to the half.

But- I am going to go ahead and attempt the full. My plan is to go out and treat it like a long run and go at a slow pace and see what happens. That is the way I ran the Green Bay marathon last year and ended up having a pretty good race so hopefully this will be a repeat of that.

I have run twice this week as that is what the schedule calls for.

Monday was an off day.
Tuesday I went out for 4 miles at lunch. Pretty nice run- slow but nice.
Wed- Ran 4 miles before work. I am so glad the morning temps are finally getting high enough that I can run in shorts in the mornings rather than getting all bundled up.

I won't run again until Saturday morning when I do a 2 mile "stretch my legs" run.

Then the race on Sunday.

ING Training- Week 17

I got in a few runs during the week and had hopes of having one more good week before the race.
Monday I ran 4 miles during lunch. I had to stop at the 1 mile and 1.5 mile mark to stretch my ham string. It felt like at any moment it would lock up on me through out the whole run.
Tuesday I waited until the evening to run. I thought about not running today but it was too pretty not to - 76 degrees and sunny!! My ham string was tight starting out but loosened up nicely and actually felt ok during the run.
Wed- took the day off
Thurs- 6 miles before work. Felt good again- nice slow run.
Fri- took off
Sat and Sun- We had a family get together at Kathy's Aunt/Uncle's house on Saturday so I didn't run. I probably could have gotten up early and gone out for a run but I honestly just didn't feel like it. It was cold and windy and I opted to stay in bed. Sunday we went to the Nascar race that was here in Atlanta this weekend. Turned out to be a beuatiful day and we had a great time at the race. Again- no run.

Mon- 4 miles
Tues- 4 miles
Wed- no run
Thurs- 6 miles
Fri- no run
Sat- no run
Sun- no run

Total- 14 miles

I tried to post the pictures. For some reason it won't let me post them.

Happy Birthday to my little buddy and son. He turns 3 years old today.
Kathy had a party for him at a game ranch on Friday and had a few of his friends there. Luckily I was able to go over during lunch break.

Happy Birthday Glenn!!

ING Training week 16:
Mon- rest day (rest from what I don't know)

Tues- ran 5 miles after work. Nice warm temps for this run. I hit the hills pretty hard- probably too hard in hindsight.

Wed- 2.2 miles. I was 1.8 miles in to my run and my hamstring problem hit with a full blast. I stopped for about 10 minutes and tried to stretch it out. Started running again and made .2 more miles before I had to stop. Strecthed a bit, tried to run again and made it .2 miles and had to stop. Walked the 1.8 miles back to the truck in pain. I will ice tonight and stretch and hopefully be back out there soon. I had a few runs without any pain so hopefully that means I am on the mend and this is just a temporary set back.

Thurs- No way I could run today. I went to the gym and did my upper body weight work out and then got on the exercise bike for 20 minutes. I did a random road course, kept it on level 10, and kept the revs/min between 80 and 90, mostly closer to 90.

Fri- no run

Sat- gorgeous day but still can't run

Sun- ditto Saturday's post.

If I was 1.5 - 2 months out from the race I would have probably run this weekend- if not the full miles at least some of them. This close to the race I think it is more important to let my leg totally recover.

Mon- rest day
Tues- 5 miles
Wed- 2.2 miles
Thurs- upper body weights &
20 minutes on exercise bike
Fri- no run
Sat- no run
Sun- no run

Total- 7.2 miles

ING Training Week 15
Not alot to report this week.

My calf/hamstring problem has crept back in a little worse. That topped off with busy weekend didn't make for much running at all. Saturday I was going to wait until it warmed up a little before running and then got busy with chores around the house. Before I realized it, it had gotten too late. I took my niece out to dinner and to the Altanta Hawks vs. New York Knicks game Saturday night and we left pretty early in the afternoon to start our fun in Atl.

Sunday we got home from church and I decided to rest a little while before heading out and my in-laws stopped by, so I stayed and visited with them. Again- no running.

Mon- 0 miles
Tues- a.m.- 5 miles
p.m.- weight work out
Wed- 5 miles
Thurs- 0 miles
Fri- 0 miles
Sat- o miles
Sun- o miles

Total- 10 miles
