Recap for week of 05-22-06:
Mon- Travel day back from Green Bay
Tues- Rest day. Can't believe that my legs feel this good.
Wed- 3 mile run at lunch. M legs start out a little tight but loosen nicely. They are getting a little tired by the end of the 3 miles.
Thurs- Rest day
Fri- Rest day
Sat- Wanted to run but at the lake for the long weekend with the family and never got around to it.
Sun- Got out for a 2 mile run on the local high school track. Wasn't really any purpose to the run except to get out and run. I have the "want to run" feeling back.

I am not sure if I will do any tri's this summer or not. I am getting in the mode of wanting to concentrate on running, but may end up doing one or two for a change of pace- we'll see.

Week of 05-15-06 including race report:
Mon- 0 miles
Tues- 0 miles
Wed- 0 miles
Thurs- 4 miles
Fri- 0 miles
Sat- 2 miles
Sun- 26.2 miles

Didn't get a couple of runs in that I wanted to at the beginning of the week due to trying to get work finished up so I could take Friday off and not be too far behind.
I did mange to get out Thursday and get a good 4 miles in. I forgot my watch and enjoyed running with out so much I almost ran the marathon with out it, but I just couldn't pull the trigger and do it.

What a fun weekend. I flew into Milwaukee on Friday morning and drove to Green Bay. The rest of the group was due in on Saturday, so I just relaxed Friday night. The hotel was next to the Research Center Arena and when I checked inI was told the Green Bay Blizzard, GB's arena football team, had a game that night and tickets were only $9.50. So after eating dinner at Brett Farve's restaraunt I decided to check out the game. Even though Georgia has 2 teams, I have never been to an arena football game. It was a fun "event". I am pretty much an old school football fan and this was way different, but kind of fun.

On Saturday morning I went out for a 2 mile run in a nice neighborhood I wanted to take a tour of Lambeau field. When I got there I got a surprise. The Packers were practicing as part of their 3 day mini camp. After watching the remainder of practice I decided to go on the tour, but as I walked up the stadium, I noticed there were players that had come back to the stadium and were signing autographs. After watching for a minute I stepped up and asked for Cory Rodgers autograph. He was signing pictures, helments, paper, and all I had was my Best Western room key. He looked up and said, "Best Western? How is it? You know I am a rookie and if I get cut I may need to come stay with you, is it nice?" What a great personality he had.

In the P.M. I went to the expo. I saw Lori, then Nels/Lyra and family, then Len and his friends Mike and Sara.
Saturday night we went to dinner where I finally got to meet Rhonda W. and Bob.
After dinner Rhonda, Bob, Len and I went to meet Phil Van Ess and Nels for a drink before retiring for the night. While were there, we were given a sheet of paper announcng the upcoming vibrator races that were to start in a while. We didn't stay for that!

One thing of interest. While we were waiting for Phil to call to tell where we were meeting, Rhonda said "there's a Kenyan." We watched him talk to a couple of people then bound in to the restaurant. I joked that I should go get my picture taken with him and get his autograph in case he won. Well- while watching the news Sunday night, it was him. Yes, he won. And for the 2nd year in a row.

Sunday morning Len and I met Rhonda and Bob in the lobby where we also saw Lori and her friends. We some pre race pictures and then off to the start. After rushing through a chaotic bag check, I had 3 minutes to get to the start line. I jumped through the crowd to run to my corral and oh crap!!!! I am staring at the start line and all of the elites. I took off to the other end of the line, jumped the fence and got in the corral with a little time to spare.

It was cold and windy waiting to start- finally we were off. I wanted to go out and run a very controlled race. My training was less than desirable (to me) but I thought if I ran a smart race I would be ok.
The first few miles went by more quickly than I expected. Around mile 4 I saw Tina (one of Len's friends' friend) and cheered her on. Then just before the 7 mile mark I saw Lyra, Audrey, and Jorgen. After high fiving Audrey I asked how Nels was doing. He had not been by yet and I thought he must have gotten caught up in the bag check mess and had to line up further back. Somewhere aroung mile 11 he came cruising by looking great and liek he was out for an effortless Sunday morning run. As he was splitting off for the Halr marathon finish he turned and graciously said, "Man, I am glad I amd not running the full and get to stop in a few minutes." Thanks Nels!!!

After the split off it got hind of boring. The runners were kind of spread out and no one, at least around me, was grouped up running together. Once we got to the bike path portion of the race it was a beautiful run with the Fox River on one side and nice neighborhood on the other.

We made a turn at the end of the bike path and over a little bridge, then started our long, 5.5 mile straight stretch toward the finish. This part of the run was a very slight uphill and into the wind. Looking at my splits I can see exactly what the wind did. I was pushing trying to keep the same pace I had but couldn't. My hamstrings started to cramp a little but never fully cramped. I took 3 quick stretch breaks during miles 22, 24, and 26. Finally we turned the corner and headed in and around Lambeau field and then exited towards the finish. Down the last straight away and cross the finish line all smiles.

After the race I waited around the finisher area and watched for Lori and Rhonda. I saw Lori shortly there after but never saw Rhonda. After having a beer I headed over to the massage tent and had a wonderful massage.

Got back to the hotel and as I was going to get my ice for my ice bath I saw Lori and her friends and others sitting in the pool area have a beer. After my ice bath and shower I headed down and sat with them for a beer and trading of race stories before we all went our separate ways. A little later that whole group met up at the Stadium Grill and Bar for a drink and food.

I had 2 goals for this race- 1- to run the whole race, and 2- to run 3:45 to 4:00, but to break 4:00.
I met both goals (with the exception of the 3 stretch breaks). But even better than that- I feel like I ran my most controlled, smartest race out of the 11 marathons I have run.
The marathon specifics are:
Mile 1- 8.42

Recap of week beginning 05-08-06:
Mon- No run
Tues- No run
Wed- 4 miles
Thurs- No run
Fri- No run
Sat- 3 miles
Sun- 7 miles

Total- 14 miles

I didn't really know what to run this week so I made it up as I went (along with some help from a busy week at work). I figured as long as I got some good quality miles in I would be ok- and I did.
I think basically I am using this as base building for my next training session since I got so far behind at first and never really caught back up.

Race week is finally here. Wisc. is getting a lot of rain. It rained all of last week and the forecast is for rain all of this week. Sunday, race day, is supposed to be beautiful, sunny, a low of 48 and a high of 70. If this comes through it will be perfect.

Recap of running week beginning 05-01-06:
Mon- No Run
Tues- A.M.- Full body weights; P.M. - 4 miles
Wed- No Run
Thurs- 6.5 miles
Fri- No run
Sat- 6.7 (10K race w/ .5 warm up)
Sun- 4 mile rovery run

Total- 21.2

Overall not a bad week of running. I enjoyed all 4 runs. Legs were a little tight on Tuesday's run from the work out earlier in the day.

I ran the Lake Hartwell Dam Run 10K on Saturday morning. This is the 3rd time I have run this race- in 2003 when I was in great shape, then in 2005 and 2006 when I am in "ok" shape. I actually thought I was in better shape this year than last, but after running the race I am not so sure.
The course starts out on a slight downhill for 1 mile then 2.1 miles of uphill. The last 3.1 is basically flat as most of it is across the Lake Hartwell dam. This race is getting more popular each year even though it is in the 28th year of existence. The 10K had particapants from GA, SC, and NC.
My goal was to run 7:00's - 7:15 's for the race. I started out and was trying to keep it slow. I wasn't really even breathing hard when I crossed the 1 mile mark. Then came the 2.1 miles of gradual uphill. I held it pretty good up the hill. Each year I get to the 3.1 mile turnaround and the course messes with my head. I have just finished coming up a hill but when I turn and head back towards the dam, the first .25-.35 mile feels like I am still going up hill. It is just an optical illusion because of the way the road is cambered but for some reason it messes with my head every year.
Got to the 4 mile mark and walked through the water stop to get some fluids in. Took off again and had slowed a lot- then at 5.8 I walked again. This is 2 years in a row I let the humidity get me in this race and walked in the 2nd half of the race.
Coming around to the finish, there was an 18 year guy that I had been following for a while and after my little walk break I gave it everything I had to catch him. I passed him with .1 left, only for him to pass me back just before we crossed under the clock.

I finished 33rd overall, 7th in my age group.
Splits:
1- 6.50
2- 7.12
3- 15:18
4- mile 3 and 4 together- missed the split
5- 7.40
6- 7.29
.2- 1.25

Total- 45.55

I used my last half marathon time (1:45:05) and this 10K time (45.55) to see get an idea of what I may try for in Green Bay. These 2 times indicate a 3:35 - 3:40 marathon. I was thinking 3:45-3:50, so that is right in line.

I don't really know how to taper for Green Bay. My mileage has not been real high and I don't really feel like I have anyhing to taper from.

Pictures from the race a couple of weeks ago:
1- Glenn eating pizza before the race
2- looking for me at the .25 marker
3- watching me around the 2 mile area
4- at the finish line- you can only see my feet in the left of the picture.

Here is my training through the first 15 weeks. My plan is to get another 15 mile run in, hopefully this week by Wednesday.

I am trying to figure out if this is enough mileage and long runs to run the marathon on 05-21-06. My gut feeling is if I go out very slow and relaxed and just treat this like a long run that I should be able to complete it standing up.

Recap for week begnning 04-23-06:
Mon- No run scheduled
Tues- Upper body weights; no run
Wed- a.m.- 6 mile run; p.m.- 600 yard swim
Thurs- 3 mile run
Fri- No run scheduled
Sat- 6 mile run. I missed my window for a run a run and could only run 6 due to plans
Sun- again- missed my window for a run and due to plans couldn't get it in.

I need to try to get at least a 15 mile run in by Wed. I have always heard it is better to go in to a marathon under trained than over trained. Where is the line between undertrained and trained? Is it an arbritrary number? I have some long runs in, but have been very inconsistant with them. I don't have any high mileage weeks in, but do I have enough. I have no idea.
